Bible Verses for Depression

When everything feels heavy and joy seems impossibly far away, you are not weak and you are not forgotten. These verses meet you in the low place, where God is close to the brokenhearted and promises that the night will not last forever.

12 verses · King James Version

The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.

Psalm 34:18 · King James Version

Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.

Psalm 42:11 · King James Version

What this verse means

The psalmist honestly asks his own soul, 'Why art thou cast down?' and then chooses hope in God — you can speak to your own heaviness and still hold on to hope.

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

Matthew 11:28 · King James Version

He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.

These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

John 16:33 · King James Version

What this verse means

Good questions

Questions people ask

What does the Bible say about depression?

The Bible never shames people for feeling low; it meets them there. Psalms 34:18 says God is close to the brokenhearted, Psalms 42 shows even a faithful believer asking why his soul is cast down, and Matthew 11:28 records Jesus inviting the weary to come to Him for rest.

Can a Christian be depressed and still have faith?

Yes. Godly people in Scripture wrestled with deep despair — David, Elijah, and Jeremiah among them — without losing their faith. Verses like 2 Corinthians 4:8-9 describe being pressed and perplexed yet not destroyed, which is faith holding on inside the struggle, not the absence of it.

Should I read the Bible instead of getting help for depression?

Scripture is a real source of comfort, and God also works through doctors, counselors, and people who care for you. Verses like Psalms 147:3 remind you He heals the brokenhearted, and reaching out for help can be part of how that healing comes.
